What is the history and popularity of the app?

Small Improvements (Si) was founded in June 2010 by Per Fragemann, the previous Senior Manager of Confluence Development. He created Si with the goal of creating a performance management system that would be appealing to companies. The name is based on the theory that most improvements work best if not applied on a massive scale, but incrementally. Site traffic averages between 500-1,500 unique visitors per month.

What are the differences to other apps?

The Si app allows 360 degree feedback, meaning anonymous feedback from peers, which can be very helpful insights into the employee's work practices. Feedback is a continual process with recognition for achievements. The integration with Atlassian allows balanced, comprehensive appraisals quickly and easily. It is a very comprehensive HR tool.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The application has a lot of features in an intuitive interface. It has taken the HR review process and simplified it as well as expanding on it for the benefit of both the employee and administrator.

Administrators may view 360 degree reviews and all performance reviews in chart format for a fast, visual impression of requests and compliance. Below the charts, a breakdown of team member compliance and the ability to nudge someone to remind them that something needs their attention is a simple click function. The pie charts themselves are clickable and by selecting a particular section of the chart, the applicable data is isolated from the comprehensive list below the charts.

The Objectives area allows the administrator to view all of the team members and their objectives, as well as the progress each member is making towards their objectives.

Settings, such as color themes, core settings, company details, CSS design, integration information, and advanced settings such as URL subdomains, minimum password lengths, etc. are available to the administrators.

Users may also impersonate sample users to simulate other roles within the app. It is interesting to see the view from the administration viewpoint, an intern's view, a manager's view, and the CEO's view.

Every person, regardless of role, has the same dashboard, with options to write a message on the message board, give 360 degree feedback, view performance reviews, and view or write objectives. Each one that has something that is reaching a due date has a red tag with the number of days left to complete a task in that area. The message board is prominent and each member may add a new message or reply to an existing message. Badges are awarded to some members and each message is categorized as praise, idea, announcement, take a note, or provide feedback. Objectives may be private, visible only to the employee and their manager, or public. They may also have an icon to help represent the objective.

Performance reviews are also graphed as a comparison table between the employee view and manager view. Clicking on this graph provides the review from the employee of their own performance as well as their manager's review.

There is a lot of very useful functionality within this application and it is all easy-to-use and intuitive. Everything needed for ongoing performance review and feedback is contained in a very pleasing interface with whatever is needed readily available, regardless of the user's role.

How does the registration process work?

To register, users provide first name and business email address. Users are encouraged to use their business email address, but personal email addresses are permitted. A confirmation email with link are sent immediately. The user is then redirected to the app to choose a password and profile picture. Users then indicate what features they wish to try, time zone, and time format. The account defaults to administrator so that the app may be fully evaluated. Sample users are included for educational purposes and may be deleted.

What does it cost to use the application?

There are three plans to choose from. The Bronze Plan, at $3 per user per month, includes performance reviews, 360 degree feedback, objectives, continuous feedback/notes/messaging, badges and social recognition, basic reporting and 11-750 users. The Silver Plan, at $4 per user per month, includes all of the above, plus Advanced 2D performance reporting, external 360 degree reviewers, customizable emails, BambooHR HRIS integration, Atlassian Confluence integration, Atlassian Crowd integration, and 11-1500 users. The Gold Plan, at $5 per user per month, includes all of the above, plus custom design, custom wording, JIRA integration, subdomain, Google Apps SSO integration, and 11-2000 users.

All plans offer discounts for prepayments of one or two years. Each plan also offers a free trial. The free trial is for ten users or less. No credit information is required.

This app is recommended for small to medium sized companies for increasing productivity. It also helps retain good staff and enhance communication.
